Opportunity Snapshot
This position offers you the "best of two worlds:" on the one hand, you will enjoy the positive aspects of a smaller company -- for example, the Display Engineering group is very visible here in our corporate headquarters, and you'll see clearly how your contributions support our mission. On the other hand, Kopin is expanding significantly, in part because demand for CyperDisplay products is growing in existing and new markets, from digital cameras to video eyewear to military applications. This translates into a steady stream of fresh and engaging challenges for you.
You will develop drive electronics for CyberDisplay products, including reference designs, evaluation kits, test boards, and specialized video systems. CyberDisplay products are the world's only transmissive LCDs that use high-quality single-crystal silicon transistors, and have the world's highest pixel density, allowing the sharpest resolution for their size. You'll "own" all phases of design from schematics to writing code for programmable logic devices to hand-off to manufacturing.
To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have a strong background in analog and digital circuit design (including A/D and D/A converters), programmable logic, and micro controllers, as well as solid programming skills in C, C++, C# and assembly language. We're looking for a BSEE (MSEE preferred) with three to five years of experience, although we also will consider recent graduates with demonstrated relevant hands-on lab experience (more than just paper or simulation designs). Experience with video systems is desirable, especially familiarity with broadcast and computer video standards.
Kopin, Inc. is an R&D-driven company with more than 200 patents in the fields of lightweight, power-efficient, ultra-small liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). This passion for innovation is backed by a solid financial position: as of July 1, 2006, we had $111.8 million in cash and marketable securities with no long-term debt. We have a solid team and a collaborative culture -- but don't just take our word for it. Submit your resume, and if you are qualified you can meet with our people to find out why they wouldn't work anywhere else.
Note on Citizenship/Immigration Status: As a federal government contractor, we are subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and therefore you must be a US citizen or permanent resident to hold this position.
What's in It for You
Broad impact, high profile applications and customers -- in addition to helping develop displays for camcorders and digital cameras, you'll be involved in our initiative to play a key role in the fledgling video eyewear market (glasses that can be used with iPods and other portable video equipment). We work with top tier companies like JVC, Samsung, Kodak, and others. Military applications include night vision and thermal sighting equipment.
Great work environment -- almost all of our senior leaders come from technical backgrounds, and they maintain "open door" policies in our flat, agile structure, meaning decisions are made quickly.
Autonomy -- we'll give you support when you need it and "elbow room" when you don't.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and discretionary bonus potential, we offer a comprehensive benefits package.
High tech hub -- you don't have to live in California to pursue a career on the leading edge of the semiconductor industry. Located 40 miles south of Boston and 20 miles east of Providence, Taunton, MA is a regional high tech hub. This modernity coexists with a rich tradition of history, stretching back to the city's founding in 1637.
More About Your Role
Kopin first introduced CyberDisplay products in 1997 and today these LCDs are manufactured in a broad range of resolutions, including a high-definition TV resolution display comparable in size to a postage stamp. Using optical magnification, however, the CyberDisplay microdisplays can produce large, vivid images equivalent to those generated from an LCD TV. This concept is the basis for Digital iVision technology, which enables ultra-portable eyewear for mobile video applications. Kopin's CyberDisplay products and applications are protected by more than 100 patents and patents pending. Here's where you will fit in . . .
Reporting to our VP of Engineering, you will join a Display Engineering team that includes seven other Engineers (we're adding this position because of growth) and four Technicians. We break out the team's activities into three areas: display circuit design, driver IC development, and design of drive electronics at the circuit board level. You'll work in the latter area, although there is a good degree of interaction across the entire team. The team is divided between our corporate HQ here in Taunton (where you will be based) and our manufacturing facility in Westborough, about 40 miles northwest; you may visit the Westborough location from time to time.
You can expect to be working on three to four projects at any given time, and the length and scope of the project will vary. You'll need to be able to switch quickly from one project to another as priorities shift in response to a dynamic market. We support both internal and external customers; here are some examples of the kinds of projects you'll be involved with:
For the Manufacturing team we develop boards used in testing; a new board design may take from two weeks to two months.
We create quick demo products and other tools for Sales and Marketing, and these projects may last a week or two.
Government projects tend to be larger in scale and scope and may last several months.
Your specific activities will include:
Carrying out schematic entry, prototyping, simulation, and testing.
Writing code for programmable logic devices and for microcontrollers.
Work with customers to help them get the most out of our displays.
Preparing work instructions, bills of materials, test reports and other documents associated with the product development process.
Many of our customers are in Asia, and you may travel there (or other global locations) on occasion. We estimate that your travel would amount to less than 5% of the time.
Keys to Success
In order to be an outstanding Display Electronics Engineer, you will:
Promote open communications across the Display Engineering team, as well as with other functional areas.
Keep a constant eye out for opportunities in improve processes, control costs, and enhance quality.
Achieve your objectives independently while keeping the Director of Engineering in the loop.
Embrace the strong work ethic and pride of craftsmanship that is part of our culture.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
